Coronavirus in Illinois updates: Here’s what’s happening Sunday with COVID-19 in the Chicago area

Fiona Ma stood with her mother at the doorway of their house on South Benson Street as officers walked in front of them and under the yellow tape. The 20-year-old peeked outside, taking in a rare breath of fresh air after a week of being cooped up inside. Dozens of feet away, the officers’ flashlights revealed an array of shell casings in front of a blue sedan parked on the west side of Benson. Chicago Political News
Ma said she heard at least six rapid gunshots before rushing to the window and seeing her neighbor running to the aid of a person outside. It dawned on her that someone was hurt.
“I feel bad,” Ma said. “It just doesn’t happen all that much in this neighborhood. ... But it happens all the time in Chicago, so it’s not that surprising to me.”
Her mother, Allison Ma, 46, said by the time she looked outside, police squad cars were already swarming the street. “It was really fast. Really fast. ... I’ve never seen that before.”
The shooting is the 9th District’s sixth homicide of the year, according to police data. Last year, one homicide was reported. Chicago Press Release Distribution Services
